As soon as we pulled up to the Wolston mental asylum it overwhelmed me with mixed feelings, I didn’t know if I felt sad about what have happened here, scared or even amazed. As I was standing at the base of a 150 year old building, in fact one of the most notorious asylums in Australia. And even if you don’t go inside you can still hear the screams of the 50,000 patients who went there eco down the halls and through the windows.
Since 1865 when the asylum was built it lived through six decades. Until in 2001 when the patients who escaped spoke up about the truth. Leaving the asylum in the dust to crumble by the Brisbane river, and only holding onto the dark secrets and stories that are carried by screams in the wind, and captured in the purple fields of flowers.
